What to Expect From a Midwife who Provides Home Birth Services

I have been providing home birth services in The Texas Hill Country and Greater Austin Area (including Wimberley, Dripping Springs, Blanco, Johnson City, Fredericksburg, Marble Falls, Canyon Lake, Boerne, San Marcos, Marble Falls, Burnet, and more) since 2000. I have attended over 750 births during this time.

What to expect from your Home Birth Midwife:
1) Respectful Treatment- Gentle, nurturing care that respects you , your family and your beliefs. Respect for your informed decisions about medical tests, recommendations and interventions. Willingness to support your birth plan, including any family members and friends you may want present at the birth. Freedom to move, eat, bathe- to do what helps you during labor and birth; your midwife doesn't "prohibit" or "allow" but patiently supports and guides you as needed.
2)Personal Attention- Prenatal visits that allow plenty of time for questions and answers (30-60 minutes) Meaningful discussions to explore and help resolve fears and concerns you or your family may have. Caring attention to develop a trusting and nurturing relationship with you and your family.
3)Plenty of Information- the heart of midwifery care is informed choice. The more knowledge the parents have, the more empowered and prepared they are. Information about pregnancy, testing, birth and labor, care of the newborn, and breastfeeding. Suggestions about ways you can take good care of yourself and your baby. Healthy lifestyle suggestions.
4)Appropriate monitoring-regular and thorough check-ups for you and your baby throughout your pregnancy, during labor, and after the birth, to make sure both of you are healthy and doing well. Recommendations for diagnostic technology when appropriate. Planning with you for the unexpected and for the transfer of care during the pregnancy and during labor if it arises. Referrals to other healthcare providers if needed (chiropractors, acupuncturist, family practice doctor, perinatologist, etc). Expertise in normal, natural childbirth. Because midwives are experts in normal pregnancy and birth, midwives are experienced in the variations of normal birth and recognize the early signs of conditions that are not normal, including medical conditions or complications that may occasionally arise during pregnancy or the birth process.
5)Confidence in your body-Help with discovering your own body's ability to give birth, it its own way and in its own time. No routine treatments or arbitrary timetables during labor that can interfere with your body's healthy process of laboring and giving birth. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for questions or concerns with the changes you may experience during your pregnancy as well.
6)Natural Techniques for Comfort-Help you cope with the discomfort of labor. Midwives have found that encouragement, massage, relaxation, laboring in water, changing positions, and other approaches are often very effective. It really makes a difference if the woman can move about, eat, and be in her own home. Help you avoid risks (to yourself and your baby) that are associated with many standard medical techniques and hospital protocols.
7)A Care Provider that Stays with you- Attentive, sensitive care and emotional support in tune with your needs throughout labor. Midwives mother the mother. However, I also feel we are not there to take the place of your partner, but compliment and give emotional support when needed. Postpartum care and help with breastfeeding if needed. After your baby is born, the midwife will stay with you for the first few hours, once breastfeeding is established, and you and your baby are resting comfortably. A newborn exam is done which includes a neurological exam, weight, length, checking the heart and lungs, and newborn gestational age assessment, and birth certificate. The midwife will also arrange visits after the birth and care is up to 8 weeks post partum.
